A Riverbank Wintersweet Tree By Wang Shi (Tang dynasty) 江濱梅( 唐 ) 王適

Wang Shi:A Riverbank Wintersweet Tree

Of a sudden in sight, a wintersweet tree,

By the bank of the River Han, in bloom.

Not knowing spring hues could arrive this early,

To have thought ’twere a pearl maid --- I so assume.

Translated to be consistent with the painting by 倪曉濱of a lady and a flowering tree.

江濱梅 唐 · 王適

忽見寒梅樹,

開花漢水濱。

不知春色早,

疑是弄珠人。

Wang Shi's depiction of A Riverbank Winterset Tree eloquently conveys the resilience of nature under trying circumstances. Like the Winterset tree itself, which thrives in seclusion by the riverbank and offers hope and subtle beauty among the calm of winter, the imagery conjures a quiet strength. Very moving work.
